What is a strip search?

A strip search is a thorough search procedure used by law enforcement officials or prison staff to search for hidden weapons, contraband, or evidence on an individual's body or clothing. During a strip search, an individual is required to remove all clothing, including undergarments, and may be required to squat, cough, or perform other movements to ensure that no items are concealed within the body.

Strip searches are typically performed in a private location by a same-gender official and only under certain circumstances, such as when there is reasonable suspicion that an individual is carrying illegal items. The procedure can be very invasive and humiliating, and it should only be used as a last resort when no other less invasive search methods are available. In some countries, like the US, strip searches must meet certain requirements and must be conducted with respect for the individual's privacy, safety, and dignity. However, in some cases, strip searches can be abused or used to intimidate or harass individuals, particularly those who are vulnerable or marginalized.
